Andrea Tušimová: HANGING
Look out the window!
Culture, of which folklore is an integral part, is changing over time. It is living, it is changing, it is being shaped by the people who create it and by those who come from outside. The diversity of Slovak culture is suffering today. The performative installation on the roof of the tobacco factory represents problematic social and cultural contexts. On the one hand, the misuse of folklore for political purposes and the polarisation of society, on the other hand, the issue of gender inequality in relation to unpaid female domestic work.
The politicized narrative on which art forms are adequate or even correct and normal runs the risk of hierarchizing any cultural expressions. Folklore and traditions are set in opposition to a diversity of modes of production, origins and identities, while themselves being the product of the influence of multiple nationalities and ethnicities.
By placing the situation at the highest accessible point of the factory, the author transforms a predominantly private female activity, such as hanging laundry, into a public and attention-grabbing act. The hanging costume parts thus create a monochromatic flag that is an urgent message even outside the safe, festival space.
You can watch the Hanging performance from the window of the opposite building or from the factory yard on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00.
The Transnational Artistic Showcase “Reimagining Realities” is an interdisciplinary collaboration residency that unites artists from in Slovakia and Ukraine and seeks to delve into complex themes such as wartime experiences, climate change, digital tools in conflict, resistance, and the profound impact of propaganda on memory and societal mindset.
The Reimagining Realities project is implemented by Tabačka Kulturfabrik n.o. with the support of the IZOLYATSIA foundation, Trans Europe Halles and Malý Berlín and co-financed by the ZMINA: Rebuilding program, created with the support of the European Union under a dedicated call for proposals to support Ukrainian displaced people and the Ukrainian Cultural and Creative Sectors.
